Golf Word Search Terms Defined

Golf shapes everything from the way we spend our weekends to the way friends and families come together on the course. As you hunt for each hidden term in our golf word search, take a moment to read its description and learn how the game is played and what each word means on the course. Great for students, golfers, fans, or anyone who wants their puzzle break to double as a lesson in a game people love to play for a lifetime.

➛ Birdie

A score of one stroke under par on a single hole. For example, finishing a par-4 hole in 3 strokes is a birdie.

➛ Bogey

A score of one stroke over par on a single hole. It is a common result for casual golfers.

➛ Eagle

A score of two strokes under par on a single hole. It is rarer and harder to make than a birdie.

➛ Fairway

The short, neatly mown stretch of grass between the tee and the green. It is the ideal place to land your shot because the ball sits up well.

➛ Bunker

A hazard filled with sand, often placed near greens and fairways. Players use a wedge to hit the ball out of it.

➛ Putter

The club used on the green to roll the ball into the hole. It has a flat face and is the most used club in a round.

➛ Caddie

A person who carries a golfer’s bag and gives advice on distances, club choice, and the course.

➛ Driver

The largest club in the bag, used to hit long shots from the tee. It is designed to send the ball as far as possible.

➛ Green

The smooth, closely cut area of grass around the hole where players putt. It is the final stop on each hole.

➛ Tee Box

The area at the start of each hole where players take their first shot. Players place the ball on a small peg called a tee.

➛ Divot

A chunk of turf that is torn up when a club strikes the ground. Golfers are expected to replace or fill it in.

➛ Mulligan

A friendly do-over of a bad shot that does not count on the scorecard. It is not allowed in official play.

➛ Scorecard

A small card used to record the number of strokes taken on each hole. It also shows the par for each hole and the total score.

➛ Wedge

A short, angled club used for high shots that land softly, such as chips and sand shots. It is used to get out of bunkers and play close to the green.

➛ Clubhouse

The main building at a golf course, where players check in, relax, eat, and often gather after a round.
